I\u2019ve talked about this before. However, I think I neglected some of the finer points in getting started. You can (and should) run PowerShell on your R2 Core servers. More than likely you will first have to install it.<\/p>\n<p>After you\u2019ve started the server and logged on as an administrator, at the C: prompt run this command first:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: x-small;\">C:\\&gt; start \/wait ocsetup NetFx2-ServerCore<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This will load the requisite .NET Framework. Once installed, you can setup Windows PowerShell.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: x-small;\">C:\\&gt; start \/wait ocsetup MicrosoftWindowsPowerShell<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The main reason you want this is because Server Core does not support SetupManagerCMD. Instead you\u2019ll find it easier to start PowerShell from the C: prompt.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: x-small;\">C:\\&gt; powershell<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once in PowerShell, load the ServerManager module.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: x-small;\">PS C:\\&gt; import-module ServerManager<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now you\u2019ll have access to the Add-WindowsFeature cmdlet. This is a much easier way to add roles and features. Of course, I prefer to then manage them remotely from another full server. Or even better, use the Remote Server Administration Tools on Windows 7.<\/p>\n<p>While you\u2019re at it, you should also configure the server\u2019s execution policy and WinRM settings for remoting, assuming you aren\u2019t using Group Policy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: x-small;\">PS C:\\&gt; set-executionpolicy remotesigned<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: 'Courier New'; font-size: x-small;\">PS C:\\&gt; enable-psremoting<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you want to see how to make PowerShell the default shell on Server Core, take a look back at <a href=\"http:\/\/jdhitsolutions.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/power-up-your-r2-server-core-shell\/\" target=\"_blank\">this post<\/a> from earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, if you accidentally exit your PowerShell session you\u2019ll be left with an empty desktop.\u00a0 Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and either log off so you can log on again. Or choose Task Manager. In Task Manager, go to File \u2013 NewTask (Run) and type <em>powershell<\/em>.\u00a0 Or if you need the legacy shell type <em>cmd<\/em>.
